1 John 4

¹Loved ones, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. ²In this way you can know the spirit of God. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus has come in the flesh is from God, ³but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard will come, and now is in the world already. ⁴You are from God, children, and you have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. ⁵They are of the world. Because of this they speak what comes from the world, and the world listens to them. ⁶We are from God. The one who knows God hears us. Whoever is not from God does not hear us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.

⁷Loved ones, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. ⁸The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. ⁹The love of God is made clear in this way among us, because God sent his only son into the world so that we might live through him. ¹⁰In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son as a means of forgiveness for our sins. ¹¹Love ones, if God loved us in this was, we also ought to love one another. ¹²Nobody has ever seen God. If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is made perfect in us.

¹³In this we know taht we are remaining in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. ¹⁴And we have seen and we testify that the Father sent the son as savior of the world. ¹⁵God remains in whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, and he remains in God. ¹⁶You also have known and put your trust in the love which God has in us.

God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God and God remains in him. ¹⁷In this way love is made perfect with us, so that we might have boldness in the day of judgment, because we are in this world in that same way as that one is. ¹⁸There is no fear in love, but perfect love throws fear out, because fear involves punishment, and the one who is fearul has not been made perfect in love. ¹⁹We love, because he loved us first. ²⁰If anyone says "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar. For how can one who doesn't love his brother, whom he has seen, love God, whom he has not seen? ²¹And we have this commandment from him that the one who loves God should also love his brother.
