Daniel 8 1In the third year of King Belshazzar's reign, I, Daniel, saw a vision. (This was another vision, after the one I had seen before.) 2And I saw the vision when I was in Shushan the palace, which is in the province of Elam, and as I continued to look, I was by the river Ulay.
3So I raised my eyes and saw a ram standing before the river, and he had two horns, and his horns were long, and one was longer than the other, and the longer one rose up last. 4I watched the ram pushing toward the west, and the north, and the south, and no beast was able to stand before him, and there was nobody to save anyone from his hand, and he did as he wanted and became great.
5And I was thinking about that and a he-goat came from the west, passing over the face of all the land, but he didn't touch the ground. The he-goat had a horn between his eyes. 6And he came to the ram that had the two horns that I had seen standing before the river, and the he-goat ran against him in his powerful anger. 7And I saw him approach the ram, and he was furious with the ram, and he struck him, and he broke his two horns, and the ram had no more strength to stand before the he-goat, and the he-goat threw him down to the ground, and trampled him, and there was nobody to save the ram from his hand.
8And the he-goat became very great, and when he was strong the great horn was shattered, and four conspicuous horns came up instead of it, to the four winds of heaven.
9And a small horn grew out from one of them, and it became very large toward the south, the east, and the beautiful land. 10And he became great against the host of heaven, and he made some of the host and of the stars fall to the ground and he trampled them. 11And he made himself great against the prince of the host, and he removed the continual offering (tamid) and threw down the place of his sanctuary. 12And the host will be given to it along with the continual offering (tamid) in (or because of) transgression, and he will throw truth to the ground, and he will do it and will prosper.
13And I heard one of the holy ones speaking, and one of the holy ones said to his companion, "How long is the vision of the continual offering and the transgression that desolates, giving over the holy place and the host to be trampled. 14And he said to me, "After 2,300 evening and morning sacrifices have passed, then shall the sanctuary be restored."
15Now as I, Daniel, watched the vision and sought understanding, someone who looked like a man was standing next to me. 16And I heard a human voice from the Ulay river, and it said, "Gabriel! make this man understand the vision!" 17And he came over where I was standing, and as he came I was frightened and I fell on my face, and he said to me, "Understand, human, that the vision is for the time of the end." 18And as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep on my face on the ground, and he touched me, and made me stand up.
19And he said, "Behold, I am making known to you what will happen in the wrathful later time, because it's a sign of the end. 20As for the ram that you saw, its two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. 21And the he-goat is the king of Javan and the great horn that was between his eyes is its first king. 22And that it was shattered, and four horns came up instead of it, that represents four kingdoms that will rise up from the nation, but not with its strength. 23And at the end of their reign, when transgressions have been made complete, a king of forceful appearance who understands plots will arise. 24And he will be very strong, but not with his own power. And he will cause amazing destruction, and he will prosper and go on destroying strong people, and the people of the holy ones. 25And because of his cunning he shall make deceit prosper in his hand and he will be great in his own heart, and suddenly he will destroy many, and he will stand against the prince of princes, but he shall be shattered without a hand.
26And as for the vision of the evening and morning sacrifices, what was said is true. And as for you, seal up the vision, because it is for a long time in the future.
27And I, Daniel became sick for several days, and then I rose up and I did the work of the king, and I was astonished at the vision and didn't understand it.
