John 1

1The word was in the beginning, the word was with God, and the word was God by nature. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3Everything came into existence through him, and not even one thing came into existence without him. 4What came into existence in him was life, and that life was the light of humanity. 5The light was shining darkness, but the darkness didn't overcome it.

6There was a man, sent by God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to give testimony about the light, so that everyone can believe through him. 8He was not that light, but he came to bear testimony concerning it. 9It was the genuine light that enlightens every person when it comes into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him, but the world didn't know him. 11He came to his own people, but they didn't receive him. 12But he gave authority to become children of God to all those who received him, that is to those who put their trust in his name. 13They are the ones who are not born of blood, nor by the will of the flesh, nor by human will, but rather are born of God.

14The word became flesh, and pitched his tent among us, and we saw his glory, glory that was like the one and only person with th eFather, full of grace and truth. 15John testified concerning him and cried out saying, "This is the one of whom I said, "The one who is coming after me, is ahead of me in importance, because he existed before me." 16Because from his fulness we all received grace upon grace. 17Because the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18Nobody has seen God at any time. The unique God, who was in the bosom of the Father, is the one who has described him.

19Now this is John's testimony, given when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20And he confessed and did not deny; he confessed "I am not the Christ!" 21And they asked him, "Who then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." Are you the prophet?" and he answered, "No." 22So they asked him, "Who are you? So we can give an answer to those who sent us. 23He said,

I am a voice shouting in the wilderness,
'Prepare the Lord's path!'"
Just as Isaiah the prophet said. 24Now they were sent by the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" 26John answered them, "I baptize in water. There is one standing among you whom you don't know. 27He comes after me, but I am not worthy to loosen th elatch of his sandal." 28These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look! The lamb of God who is carrying the sins of the world! 30This is the one of whom I said, 'There is one coming after me who was before me because he is above me in importance.'" 31And I didn't know him, I am baptizing in water so that he can be revealed to Israel. 32And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and staying on him. 33And I didn't know him, but the one who sent me to baptize in water told me, 'Whoever you the Spirit descends on like a dove and then stays there is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' 34And I have seen, and I give testimony that this is the Son of God."

35The next day John was again standing there and two of his disciples were with him. 36And when he saw Jesus walking, he said, "Look! The lamb of God!" 37And the two disciples heard him speaking and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus turned and watched them following, and he said to them, "What do you want?" And they said to him, "Rabbi (which is translated 'teacher'), where are you staying?" 39He said to them, "Come and see." Then they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the 10th hour. 40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. 41He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah (which is translated 'Christ')." 42He brought him to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, "You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas (which is translated 'Peter')."

43The next day he wanted to go to Galilee and he found Philip, and tells him, "Follow me!" 44Philip was from Bethsaida, from the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael, and tells him, "We have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about, Jesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth." 46Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come from Nazareth?" And he said to Nathanael, "Come and see." 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look! Truly an Israel in whom there is no guile." 48Nathanael said to him, "From where do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49Nathanel answered, "Rabbi! You are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!" 50Jesus answered him, "Do you believe because I saw you under the fig tree? You will see things that are greater than this!" 51And he said to him, "Very truly I tell you, You will see heaven opened, and angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
