Mark 1

1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ.

2Just as it was written in Isaiah the prophet:
"Look! I'm sending my messenger before you,
who will prepare your path
3"He's a voice crying out in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord!
Make his paths straight!"

4John came baptizing in the desert and preaching a baptism with repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And all of the Judean countryside were coming out to him, and even all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins. 6Now John was dressed in Camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And he was preaching, saying, "Someone is coming after me, someone stronger, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to bow down and loosen. 8I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit."

9Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and he was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10And immediately as he rose up out of the water he saw the heavens torn open and the Spirit like a dove descending into him. 11And a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved son, with whom I'm pleased." 12And immediately the Spirit threw him into the desert, 13and he was in the desert for fourty days being tempted by Satan, and he was with the wild beasts, but the angels served him. 14Now after John was handed over, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the good news about God 15and saying,
"The time has been fulfilled,
and the kingdom of God is near!
Repent
and put your trust in the good news!"

16And as he was going by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, throwing fish nets in the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, "Follow after me, and I will make you become fishers of human beings." 18So immediately the left their nets and they followed him. 19And going on a little bit he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother. They were in the boat mending the nets, 20and he immediately called them. So leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired help they went after him.

21And they entered Capernaum. And immediately on the Sabbath days he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22And they were amazed at his teaching, for he was teaching them as someone having authority, and not as the scribes. 23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man in an unclean spirit and he cried out, 24saying, "What is it with you and with me, Jesus of Nazereth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you! I know who you are! The Holy One of God!" 25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Shut up and come out of him." 26And the unclean spirit shook him up and cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27And everyone was amazed, so as to discuss among themselves saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He rebukes even the unclean spirits and they obey him." 28And the rumor about him went out every into all the surrounding countryside of Galilee.

29And immediately as he came out of the synagogue he went into Simon's house. 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31And coming near he raised her up, taking her hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.

32And it became evening, when the son went down they were bringing him everyone who was sick and those troubled by demons. 33And the whole city gathered near the door. 34And he healed many who were ill with various diseases, and he threw out many demons but he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew him.

35And he rose up very early while it was still night and went out and went away into a deserted place where he could pray. 36And Simon and those with him pursued Jesus, 37and they found him and they said to him, "Everybody is looking for you!" 38And he said to them, "Let us go elsewhere into the nearby country towns, so that I might preach there as well. Because it was for this that I went forth." 39And he went into all of Galilee preaching in their synagogues and casting out the demons.

40And a leper came to him, pleading with him and saying to him, "If you wish, you can cleanse me!" 41And he was moved with pity and stretched out his hand and touched him and told him, "I want to. Be clean!" 42And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43And he warned him forcefully and immediately sent him away. 44He told him, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and bring the offering for your cleansing as Moses commanded for a witness to them." 45But he went and proclaimed repeatedly, and spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer enter a city openly, but he stayed outside in deserted places and people came to him from everywhere.
