Mark 5

1And he went to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. 2Right when he got out of the boat, he was met by a man with an unclean spirit who came out from among the tombs. 3The man lived in the tombs, and neither chains nor anything else could bind him, 4because he had been bound with shackles and chains, and he broke the chains and shattered the shackles, and nobody could control him. 5Night and day he would be among the tombs and in the hills screaming and cutting himself with rocks. 6And when he saw Jesus from a long ways away, he ran and bowed to him, 7and shouted, "What is there between us, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don't torment me!" 8For Jesus was saying to him, "Unclean spirit! Come out of the man!" 9And he asked it (the spirit), "What is your name?"
And it said, "My name is legion, for we are many!" 10Then it begged him many times not to send him out of the region.

11Now in that area there was a large herd of pigs being watched. 12And it begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we can enter them." 13So he permitted them to do so, and the unclean spirits left the man and entered the pigs, and the herd swarmed over the cliff into the sea. There were about 2,000 of them and the drowned in the sea. 14And the people who were tending them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside, and people came to see what had happened. 15And they came to Jesus and saw the man who had been tormented by the demons, who had been possessed by the legion, sitting healed and mentally healthy, and they were afraid. 16And those who had seen it told them what had happened to the man tormented by demons and to the pigs. 17And they began to beg him to leave their region. 18And as he got into the boat, the man who had been tormented by demons begged him to let him come along, 19but Jesus didn't let him, and told him, "Go to your home and to your relatives, and tell them what the Lord has done and how he has shown you mercy. 20And he went away and began to preach about the things that Jesus had done for him in the Decapolis region, and they were all amazed.

21When Jesus had crossed over the sea, a large crowd gathered around him, and they were by the sea. 22And a ruler of the synagogue named Jairos came to him, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, 23and begged him over and over again, "My daughter is terminally ill, please come and lay your hands on her so that she will be healed and live!" 24So Jesus went with him.

Now a large crowd followed him and was crowding around him. 25Now there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for 12 years. 26She had gone through much with many physicians, and had spent everything she had with no result, but rather had gotten worse. 27She had heard about Jesus and she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing, 28because she kept saying, "If I can just touch his clothing, I will be healed!" 29And immediately the source of her blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed from this sickness. 30But Jesus knew immeidately in himself that power had gone out of him, and he turned in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothing?" 31And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you, and yet you say, 'Who touched me?'" 32But he looked around for the woman who had done this. 33And the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, went and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34But he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you whole. Go in peace and be cured of your illness.

35While he was still speaking, messengers came from the home of the ruler of the synagogue saying, "Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher any more?" 36But Jesus heard the message they brought and said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Don't be afraid! Just believe!" 37And he wouldn't let anyone go with him except Peter and James and John, James's brother. 38And they came into the house of the ruler of the synagogue and he saw people mourning and weeping and making lots of noise. 39And when he had come in he said to them, "Why are you mourning and weeping? The childn hasn't died. She's sleeping!" 40But they mocked him. And he threw everyone out and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in to the room where the child was. 41And he took the child's hands and said to her, "Little girl, I tell you, Get up!" 42And immediately the girl got up and walked around, for she was 12 years old, and everyone was very amazed. 43And Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone about this, and told them to get her something to eat.
