Mark 8

1In those days there again was a large crowd that didn't have anything to eat, so Jesus called his disciples and told them, 2"I feel compassion for the crowd, because they have already been here with me for three days, and they don't have anything to eat. 3If I send them home hungry, some will faint on the way, and some of them have come from a long ways away." 4But his disciples said, "Where are we going to get enough bread to satisfy them in this desert?" 5But he answered them, "How much bread do you have?" They said, "Seven loaves." 6And he commanded the crowd to sit on the ground, took the seven loaves of bread, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to hand out, and they handed them out to the crowd. 7And they also had a little bit of fish. And when he had blessed it, and told them to hand that out too. 8And they ate, and were satisfied, and they took up seven baskets of the leftovers. 9There were about 4,000 people, and he released them.

10Then he got into the boat right away and went to the area of Dalmanutha.

11And the Parisees went out and talked with him, testing him by asking for a sign from heaven. 12Then Jesus sighed deep inside and said, "Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you truly, this generation will not be given a sign." 13Then he left them, got into the boat, and went to the other side.

14And they forgot to bring bread, so that they didn't have even one loaf with them in the boat. 15And he gave them an order, saying, "Look! See that you keep away from the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod." 16So they were considering it among themselves, "It's because we don't have bread." 17But Jesus knew about it and said, "Why are you thinking that it's because you don't have bread? Have you not yet understood? Do you still have hardened hearts? 18

Having eyes, do you not see?
Having ears, do you not hear?

and you don't remember. 19When I broke the five loaves for 5,000 people, how many baskets full of leftovers did you gather?" They answered, "Twelve." 20"When it was seven loaves for 4,000, how many baskets did you gather?" They answered, "Seven." 21And he said to them, "Don't you understand yet?"

22And he arrived at Bethsaida, and some folks brought him a blind man and asked him to touch him. 23And he put his hands on the blind man, and took him out of the village. Then he spit in his eyes, placed his hands on him and asked him, "Do you see anything?" 24And he looked up and said, "I see people like trees walking around." 25Then again he placed his hands on his eyes, and he saw again clearly, and he looked around and everything was clear. 26And Jesus commanded him to go home, and said, "Don't even go into the village." 27And Jesus and his disciples went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Now on the road he asked his disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say that I am?" 28And they said, "Some say 'John the Baptist' and others 'Elias,' and others 'One of the prophets.'" 29And he asked them, "But you, who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said, "You are the Messiah!" 30And he ordered them not to say this about him to anyone. 31And he began to teach them that it was necessary for the son of man to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and the high priests and the scribes and to be killed and after three days to rise again. 32And he was speaking the word openly. And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him. 33But (Jesus), when he had turned and seen his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Go behind me, Satan, because you don't understand the things of God, but the things of men." 34And he called the crowd and his disciples and said to them, "If anyone wishes to follow after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and let him follow me. 35For whoever wishes to save his live shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36For what does it benefit a man to gain this whole world, and lose his soul? 37For what will a man give in exchange for his life? 38For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the son of man will also be ashamed of him, whenever he comes in the glory of his Father with his holy angels."
