Mark 9

1And he told them, "I tell you truly, there are some standing here today who will certainly not taste death until they see the kingdom of God arrive in power.

2Six days later Jesus took Peter and James and John and brought them to a high mountain apart from the rest, and his appearance was changed in front of them. 3And his clothes became sparkling white, much whiter than any bleach on earth could make them. 4And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and the two of them were talking with Jesus. 5And Peter responded by saying to Jesus, "Rabbi! This is a good place to be! Let's make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6He said this because he didn't know what he was saying, because they were terrified. 7Then a cloud oversahdowed them, and there was a voice that came from the cloud: "This is my beloved son, listen to him!" 8And immediately after that they didn't see anything, except Jesus himself with them.

9Now as they descended the mountain, he commanded them not to tell anyone what they had seen, except after the son of man had arisen from the dead. 10And they held onto that word, trying to figure out what "rise from the dead" meant.

11And they asked him, saying, "The scribes say 'Elijah must come first.'" 12But he said to them, "Elijah does come first and restores everything, but how is it that the son of man must suffer many things and be treated badly? 13But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did to him what they wished, just as it was written about him."

14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a big crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15When the crowd saw Jesus, they became very excited, ran to him and greeted him. 16And he asked them, "What are you arguing with them about?" 17And someone from the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son who has an dumb spirit to you. 18Whenever the spirit seizes him, it throws him into a fit, and he foams, and gnashes his teeth, and he becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they couldn't do it." 19But Jesus answered them and said, "O faithless generation! How long will I be with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring him to me." 20and they brought the boy to him, and as soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy into a fit, and he fell on the ground, rolled around and foamed at the mouth. 21And Jesus asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From his childhood. 22And many times the spirit has thrown him into a fire, or into water, to kill him. But if it's possible, please be merciful and help us." 23But Jesus said to him, "If it's possible? Everything is possible to those who believe." 24Immediately the child's father cried out, "I believe! Help by unbelief!" 25And Jesus saw that the crowd was gathering quickly, he rebuked the unclean spirit by saying, "Oh dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never go back in!" 26It cried out and convulsed many times, and came out. And the child became as one dead, so that many people thought he had died. 27But Jesus took his hand, raised him up, and he stood.

28Now as they went home, his disciples in turn asked him, "Why couldn't we throw it out?" 29And he said to them, "This type does come out except through prayer."

30When he had left there, he traveled through Galilee, but he didn't want anyone to know. 31For he was teaching his disciples and telling them that the Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of people, and they will kill him, but when he has been killed, after three days he will rise again. 32They didn't understand what he was telling them, yet they were afraid to question him.

33And they entered Capernaum, and while they were in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?" 34But they were silent for on the way they had been discussing who was greater among themselves. 35And he sat down and called the twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, let him be the last and servant of all." 36And he took a little child, he put it right in the middle, took it in his arms, and told them, 37"Whoever receives one of these little children in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, doesn't receive me, but the one who sent me."

38John said to him, "Teacher, we saw a certain man casting out demons in your name and we hindered him, because he's not following right along with us." 39But Jesus said, "Don't hinder him. For there is nobody who will do a miracle in my name and will be able to speak evil of me right afterward. 40For whoever is not against us is for us. 41Whoever gives you a cup of water in the name because you are of Christ, I tell you he will definitely not lose his reward.

42And whoever is makes one of these little ones who believe on me stumble, it would be better if a millstone were put around his neck and he were to have been thrown into the sea. 43And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to go out into hell, into the unquenchable fire, with two hands. 44{See textual discussion} 45And if your foot makes you stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to go into life lame, than to be thrown into hell having two feet. 46{See textual discussion} 47(And if your eye cases you to stumble, throw it out. It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than to be thrown with two eyes into hell, 48where their worm doesn't die and the fire is not quenched. 49For everyone will be salted with fire. 50Salt is good, but if the salt becomes saltless, how can it be reseasoned? Have salt in yourselves and make peace with one another.
