Matthew 23 1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and his disciples, 2"The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses's seat. 3So be careful to do everything they tell you, but don't do what they do, because they speak, but they do not act. 4And they bind heavy, hard to carry burdens, and place them on peoples' shoulders, but they don't want to lift a finger to help carry them. 5They do their deeds so people can see them. They make their phylacteries large, and the fringes on the garments wide, 6and they love the best places at feasts, and the best seats in the synagogues 7and to be greeted in the marketplace and for people to call them 'Rabbi.' 8But you will not be called 'Rabbi.' For you have one teacher, and all of you are brethren. 9And you will not be called 'Father' on earth, for you have one heavenly father. 10Neither will you be called teacher, because you have one teacher, the Messiah! 11But the greatest person among you will be your servant. 12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
