Numbers 14

³⁹Moses told the Israelites all these things, and the people overwhelmed with grief. ⁴⁰And they rose up early in the morning and went up tot he top of the mountain, saying, "Here we are! Let's go up to the place that they Lord promised us, because we have sinned!" ⁴¹But Moses said, "Why are you violating YHWH's command? It won't work! ⁴²Don't go up, because YHWH is not among you. Then you won't be stricken by your enemies. ⁴³Because the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you and you will fall by the sword because you turned aside from following YHWH, and YHWH will not be with you.

⁴⁴But they dared to go to the top of the mountain, though the ark of YHWH's covenant and Moses didn't move from the middle of the camp. ⁴⁵And the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in the that mountain came down and attacked them, and scattered them all the way to Hormah.
