Getting Bible Resources Under Linux
I’ve blogged before on Bible software for Linux. One of the annoyances of switching to Ubuntu (there are very few) has been not having my Libronix software easily available. I have it on a notebook, but I don’t always have that machine on and available when I want to look something up. There is some good software, such as GnomeSword, but I’m always looking for something better.
Thanks to Eddie Arthur of the Kouya Chronicles, I found the Tyndale Bible toolbar for Firefox. I’m not going to go into much detail, but it provides a wonderful array of resources that are available online and gathers them into a quite usable interface. Based on the page, I wasn’t certain if it would work under Linux, but it does (as it should). They say for PC or Mac, but the Firefox plugin installed nicely and works fine on my Ubuntu installation.
I have only begun exploring the resources, but it makes things like critical Greek texts and good, readable Hebrew texts easily accessible for various Bible versions. I’m thinking that interfaces to a variety of online resources may largely replace standalone products for which you buy and download individual books and products. There will still be licensing issues, but one could provide a means of online licensing. As more and more people have regular access to the internet, this should simply accelerate.
