Remembering Fidonet

Well, it looked something like this! (Image Credit: Openclipart.com GDJ)

I enjoyed reading a short article on the history of Computer Bulletin Board Systems (later just BBS) on ZDNet, not because I was there at the start (in 1978 I was learning how to work with a programmable calculator), but because it ended up at Fidonet. Starting in 1985 I operated a Fidonet BBS in Bellevue, Nebraska (I was in the Air Force, stationed at Offutt AFB), called the Wind Dragon Inn. You can find the listing online still, though it says I started in 1986. Hey, 30 years ago, who remembers? They may well be right!

I remember my excitement over the computer I purchased for the system, which had a 20 MB hard drive and a full 640K of RAM. Eventually I had two lines, with one at 1200 bps and one at 2400. We had both software for the Amiga and eventually some gaming stuff once we moved to an Amiga a few years down the road.

I also found this recent reference to the board today.

Memories!!
