Shopping on Amazon: The HP Omen Laptop

I had an opportunity to look at this computer this week in the flesh, or better in the silicon, and so I thought I’d put it up here for shopping at Amazon.com. This is a high end computer for gaming or serious business applications that require graphics or very high speed.

Key elements to look at are the SSD (in the version pictured 512GB, which few will actually need), the graphics card (GTX-1070, again few will actually need this), and the system RAM (16GB, which will leave you rattling around). The system I looked at and recommended to a client had a slightly slower graphics card and a smaller SSD.

There’s a temptation when you’re buying to overdue some of the hardware numbers, but watch the HD and SSD size. You can use a 128GB SSD if you also have a mechanical hard drive. Not all your data needs to be on the SSD and you likely won’t notice the performance difference. You do have to pay attention to the way your device is set up, so that your files are stored in the right place.

In terms of graphics, few people need the graphics speed of a machine like this, but if you want to play games on your laptop, this is the thing. If you want to do some serious 3D work or process very large files, you may not be stressing the graphics card, but you’ll get some great speed.

At the least, this machine provides an excellent shopping experience.
