Good Post on Ransomware
How to beat ransomware: prevent, don’t react, from MalwarebytesLabs. The one thing I would add to this article is further emphasis on backup. I can’t emphasize it enough. No matter how attentive you are, you cannot absolutely be certain that you won’t get hit by ransomware. You can be careful, but most people use their…

Problem with Hangouts on Air (YouTube) and Disable HTML5 Autoplay
I installed this rather useful extension on the Chrome browser on my laptop and quite stupidly forgot two things: With Chrome on multiple computers signed into the same account, the extension is added to all. Google Hangouts on Air uses this type of video. One can disable this extension by the page, but the extensions…

Aer.io Product Widget
I’m continuing to work with my aer.io store and will have a number of new things on here shortly. They have improved their widget, making it easier to embed in WordPress code. I’ll reflect that in a widget shortly. Here’s a widget for a book I just reviewed, the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible. Buy…

MYSQL UPDATE Statement and Already Updated Records
In considering how to update a table based on a set of input data that might or might not actually change the records, I was wondering how MySQL processed an UPDATE where the record in question was already up to date. The question would be overhead in processing. If the record is left alone, there…

After a rough day yesterday, I seem to be getting it! I’m going to test an aer.io buy button inline for Pathways to Prayer You should see…

Should You Upgrade to Windows 10?
Microsoft is rather anxious to get people to upgrade to Windows 10 these days, and they are showing it by constant suggestions and by displaying windows that don’t have an obvious option to say “no.” In order to avoid the upgrade, you can always use the window’s normal ‘X’ button to close it without installing….

XDebug with Netbeans and PHP 7.0 on Ubuntu 16.04
I had a hard time finding basic instructions, and in fact, I found that many of the more complex instructions were unnecessary. This is with Netbeans 8.1. The XDebug package in the repositories is current and will work. You just need to set your php.ini file correctly. I found answer #1 at this link quite adequate…

Remembering Fidonet
I enjoyed reading a short article on the history of Computer Bulletin Board Systems (later just BBS) on ZDNet, not because I was there at the start (in 1978 I was learning how to work with a programmable calculator), but because it ended up at Fidonet. Starting in 1985 I operated a Fidonet BBS in…
