From the folks at, we have some brief history of #FORTRAN (#TECHTIMEWARP).

I wanted to add my humor note, as I was working with computers while FORTRAN was still fairly commonly used. I studied it and took a challenge exam, getting 4 quarter hours of college credit in the language, but I never owned a compiler nor did I ever write a single line of FORTRAN code. That is only mildly odd. If you understand the general logic, you can answer multiple-choice questions about a language, and you can tell what various code snippets will do.

I also have college credit in COBOL, again a language I have never used.

I have no college credit in any of the languages I use or have used regularly, such as C, C++, Java, and PHP.
